瑜伽一定要空腹練習，因為在做動作時，食物還會在胃里和身體一起動，不利于身體健康。而且瑜伽不僅作用在身體上，還作用在能量上，如果胃里有食物的話，能量就不能平衡流動到身體的每一個部分，大多數的能量都會流向消化系統，用于消化食物，習練也就得不到益處。因此瑜伽習練最好的時間就是在早上空腹練習。如果吃了豐盛的食物的話，至少要間隔三到四小時才能練習。而且習練完以后要等半個小時才能吃東西。
食物會對身體產生很多影響。瑜伽將食物分為三類：惰性食物：所有非蔬菜水果的食物，多次烹飪的食物，這些食物會讓我們感到慵懶；變性食物：烹調過度或加入過多調料的食物，會改變食物的自然味道。會讓我們過度興奮，思維運動加快，身體變得坐立不安；悅性食物：一般是自然的食物，沒有過度烹調，也沒有加入過多調料的食物，比如沙拉和水果，蔬菜，牛奶，黃油，蜂蜜，使我們感覺身體輕松，易于消化，吃完后會感覺精力充沛，同時又會很舒服平靜。瑜伽練習者應多吃悅性食物。
